| Description | Explains that specimen 808 is from the interior of Shortland Island, three to four miles from the sea, and is overlain by an ancient barrier reef [followed by a drawing displaying the soft deposit under the reef]. Is not therefore surprised that it is a shallow water deposit. Believes that when this ancient reef was at sea level, it was probably five or six miles off the adjacent coast of volcanic formation. Is glad that these deposits will repay the labours Brady spent over them. Informs that a particular part of the Solomon Islands group which Brady had been examining was in the protection of Germany, where scientists were already exploring New Guinea and preparing to explore the Solomon Islands. Believes that in a few years the Germans will follow in the same line of investigation as Brady was engaged in. Asks for the shells Brady mentioned to be sent to Edgar Smith. |
