| Description | Encloses a letter from Edgar Smith concerning the shells he had sent him [see MS/787/1/38]. Says the results have not been decisive due to the little knowledge on the molluscan found in depths around the islands beyond the coral zone. However, Smith's remarks, together with Mr Etheridge's, support the view of the post tertiary age of these beds. Believes that as far as general appearance goes, the deposits are all much of the same age, regardless of whether they were near the coast or raised several miles above it (as he believes elevation ocurred very rapidly in that region). Believes that much light will be thrown once sounding and dredging are done between 50 and 300 or 400 fathoms. Will ask professor Mosely about two of the corals which occur in the deposits Brady had been observing. |
