TitleLetter from Marci and Paul Dirac to Esther and Meyer Salaman
Date27 September 1980
Description223 Chapel Drive
Tallahassee Fla 32304
I am late thanking you both for being such super hosts, making guests feel so warmly welcome, giving the illusion of no disturbing, while, of course, you both gave up your cosy rooms, and beds. It is a gift, to make it this easy for your intruders. It was such a happy time you gave us, very many thanks. From us both.
Pauls sister made medical history. She had a eight and a half hour brain operation, from which she recovered so well, that after two and a half weeks, she was able to hobble even as far as the parking place, when Paul paid her his last, 3rd visit. They are showing her to doctors, from near and far.
My niece Erika from Mannheim (Germany) came to stay in the same fantastically modern Trust House called the Apllo, and as we truly love one another, we had a very good time. The weather was fine, we found a real quaint place to eat, very cosy, with housecooking a la Budapest. And so much less dear than the Apllo, where we all dined the 1st evening. I happen to have some shares in Trust Houses Forte, and feel I ought to get rid of them fast.
In London, we were treated by British Airways royally. As we lost our return tickets, (I had super savers, the dates cannot be changed for the return journey,) I, via Valya and her kind boyfriend, went up to the head of BA. So, the special service officer, looked after us, pouring refreshments into us, taking us by car to the plane and sent a Telex to Miami. This was the real help. There, Miami, one had to go through customs, lug ones luggage in the multitude of passengers, who all try to cheat getting ahead of people ruthlessly, than lift the baggage on to the tables, ect, ect. We were whisked through, no customs, and got the plane very easily on to Tallahassee. Where our Mary with her athletic Pete, plus my great and wonderful Hungarain friend with her big car, waited, brought us home, and helped with the whole lot into the house. However well all this went, thank God, the jet lag no-one can help, or eradicate. So, the wedding we were supposed to attend as the chief guests yesterday, I went alone, while Paul slept 5 hours in the afternoon, but had to miss the reception, and come home, to feed Paul. It will be hard to explain the situation. The adopted 2nd daughter of the Hungairain music professor here, darling, living encyclopadia, Kilenyi, whoms 1st adopted daughter did not even invite them to her wedding. Children can behave incredibly. They gave us a super wedding, I am glad, I went.
Tonight we go to the Shelines for dinner, I spoke to you about them. They have 7 children, all of them gifted, nice and normal. She is a terrific beauty, got her Ph.D. last year, now, when all the children are either finished with University, or well on the way. Daughter of Swedish Missionaries, born in Zambia, where she paid a sentimental visit, during big upheavals there, he is the chemistry professor, Norwegian descent, and adoring husband and father. So, you see Esther there are everywhere good and the opposite. This country is a fine melting pot, with all foreigners so non are being made to feel bloody foreigners. Thank God, for that.
We heard from my brother, who is very anxious, for Paul to go to Eritza next summer, where he goes since many years every summer, and enjoys it.
Leise flehen, meine Lieder, durch die Nacht zu Dir. Darling, wonderful, uniquely kind and cultured Meyer, it meant SO much to me, all you did that last night. I have not heard it, for maybe, almost 60 years. May we hear you again, and enjoy your unique kind ways, you dear wonderful being. Esther, you are a lucky girl. Take care of that darling.
My love to both of you, as ever. Your marci.

Added note by Paul Dirac;
Thank you so much for looking after us so well and for your interesting conversation. I learnt a lot about Tolstoy from you. They are going to show Crime and Punishment here. I was very glad to find my sister able to move around only a few weeks after a serious brain operation.
With all best wishes. Paul
