TitleLetter from William Benjamin Carpenter, 17 Savile Row, to Edward Sabine
Date1 June 1868
DescriptionHe has examined the specimen of Crinoid during a visit to Belfast, dredged by the younger Sars. Describes its significance and considers that the geology of the deep sea should be systematically examined. Proposes (in conjunction with Professor Wyville Thomson) that a vessel with a trained crew could be obtained from the Admiralty for the purpose of such an expedition. Believes that the Royal Society should promote the idea.

Carpenter and Wyvill Thomson were the originators of the Challenger Expedition. This letter was published in an appendix to Carpenter's paper 'Preliminary report of dredging operations in the seas to the North of the British Islands, carried on in Her Majesty's steam-vessel 'Lightning', Proceedings of the Royal Society v17 1868-69 p168-200.
