TitleLetter from Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond and Duke of Aubigny, Goodwood, to Martin Folkes
Date26 November 1742
DescriptionRichmond would like a whirly-gig, by which he means a dial or compass with a hand showing the winds, by being turned by a weathercock on top of a chimney. He does not know who makes such things, but supposes that Folkes could enquire among the mechanics of London. Once he has found somoene, he should be sent with his wheels and iron bars to Goodwood, by the Chichester carrier which leaves Southwark every Thursday morning. The compass dial, and perhaps the iron bars might be made at Goodwood, as Richmond has a very good smith.
