AdminHistoryThe Schehallien Experiment of 1774 was funded by a grant from the Royal Society. Its purpose was to determine the mean density of the Earth, and involved measuring the deflection of a pendulum due to the gravitational attraction from a nearby mountain. The experiment was conducted by Nevil Maskelyne FRS, Charles Hutton and Reuben Burrow.

A copy of Mr Leadstone's article, 'Maskelyne's Schehallien Experiment of 1774' ('Physics Education') is held by the Royal Society Library.
