| Description | He cannot recall acknowledging Boys' essay on 'weeds', but had fixed in his mind to send a copy of his '60 years' as a riposte. This is 'botanical guff' but Boys may be amused by the earlier chapters describing happy times before Bower was removed to Glasgow. Notes his career there, where he was quite content. Bower was never a gardener, being too impatient and incompetent, but good at cutting plants up. The article on weeds has been a happy reminder of South Kensington. Bower thinks that his book might explain some of his deficiencies then and after. Notes the gap between school and university neither of which taught elementary science. He wonders how he managed to pass the first part of the Tripos at Cambridge. He hopes that Boys' garden is not as dry as a Huntley & Palmer's biscuit.. |
