DescriptionIn reference to the 'Spectator' no. 241 6 December 1711 [an article on communication by needles and loadstones]. Scott said that the article mentioned communicaton between Paris and Vienna but he was wrong. The article does refer to communication between continents. It states that needles were touched to a loadstone and thereafter moved in sychronisation across dials with alphabets.
