Title | Copy letter from Herbert Rix, to Miss E B Hanbury, Swiss Cottage, Bournemouth West |
Date | 8 November 1887 |
Description | Rix is happy to save Miss Hanbury who is on the brink of a 'gulf of delusion'. The mace is at the Royal Society but it is not the 'bauble'. Hanbury will find this popular superstition disproved most conclusively in Weld's 'History of the Royal Society'. Rix spoke a few days ago with Robert Browning who thinks the mace is the 'bauble'. Should Hanbury agree with Browning she will find it figured in Weld's history and may copy that figure. This mace was given to the Society by Charles II but the true bauble, Rix is told, was in all probability melted down. |
