Title | Copy letter from Lord Rayleigh [John William Strutt], to Professor Richard Threlfall, Sydney, Australia |
Date | 3 January 1895 |
Description | On behalf of the Royal Society Strutt has to write a difficult letter and one that will not be satisfactory to Threlfall. Both the referees of Threlfall's paper consider it to be of inordinate length and that it needs to be cut down to a third of its current length. Moreover they criticize the style severely. The situation is made worse by the fact that the Society has overspent itself and will have to refuse to print 'really good work'.
Threlfall's absence causes difficulty and delay and Strutt is inclined to suggest that Threlfall allows them to cut the paper and introduce verbal alterations. If this course is adopted Threfall must make up his mind 'not to be offended whatever may happens'. The alternative would be to wait and send back the paper if required. Asks Threlfall to wire 'proceed', 'wait' or 'send'. |
