In answer to your letter of yesterday's date, the office of President of the Royal Society has been held by a surgeon once before, namely by Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie, Bart., Sergeant-Surgeon to the Queen, who was elected P.R.S. on November 30, 1858 and held office until November 30, 1861.
I am, yours faithfully,
Asst. Sec. R.S. [Assistant Secretary, Royal Society]'.
