Title | Copy letter from Michael Foster, to Rear-Admiral Hugo L Pearson, Commander in Chief on the Australian Station, Sydney |
Date | 9 December 1898 |
Description | The Royal Society has received a letter from Professor T W Edgeworth David giving a brief account of the boring carried out by commander C D Sturdee of the HMS 'Porposie' in the lagoon at Funafuti. In view of the circumstances under which the boring occurred the depth reached must be regarded as a remarkable exploit. Professor David and the Royal Society Coral Boring Committee regard the boring as very successful in as much as it has led to the acquisition of data of extreme value.
Conveys the thanks of the Society for the use of the warship and asks Pearson to convey to Commander Sturdee their high appreciation of his efforts. |
