Title | Copy letter from Arthur William Rucker, to Joseph Lister, President of the Royal Society |
Date | 7 May 1900 |
Description | Rucker received a letter from Sir Clements Markham stating that the [?] now was that the Executive Committee with Sir V Hamilton, Captain Tizard and himself [?] recommend to the officers. Rucker did not reply till he had seen Tizard who says no new meeting has been held and the Naval Officers Committee have adjourned. Rucker therefore writes the enclosed letter which he thinks it best Lister sees [not enclosed].
On Tuesday Sir A Hoskins told Rucker that the Naval Officers are very divided in opinion. Today Tizard told him that the two officers were selected on Markham's nomination[?] and that Lord Walter Kerr said to Tizard or Wharton, that the Admiralty took no responsibility. Of course this was not for publication but if the expedition came to grief the Admiralty would rely upon it. Rucker thinks they ought be very careful. |
