TitleCopy letter from Professor Arthur William Rucker, to Professor James Alfred Ewing, Fellow of the Royal Society
Date6 November 1901
DescriptionThe paper by Drs [Howard Turner] Barnes and [Ernest George] Coker 'On the Variation of the Critical Velocity of Water with Temperature' which Ewing communicated last month, was sent by the Sectional Committee to two referees. Based on these reports Rucker has been authorized to ask if Ewing thinks it best that the paper be withdrawn and the investigation continued until more concordant results are obtained.

Describes how one of the referees thinks the experimental method is open to at least two serious objections. The other referee, after criticizing the papers on the grounds of the incompleteness of the experimental evidence concludes by stating that it would be desirable to give the authors an opportunity of reconsidering and repeating their work. If Ewing does not act on this suggestion Rucker thinks it probable the paper will be consigned to the archives.
