Title | Copy letter from William Huggins and Clements Robert Markham, to the Secretary, His Majesty's Treasury |
Date | 23 June 1903 |
Description | On behalf of the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society, the Society wish to loose no time in stating that they accept with great satisfaction the offer of His Majesty's Government to take over the responsibility of the further relief expedition to the Antarctic Regions. They frankly accept that the condition that the existing relief ship, the 'Morning' should be handed over to the Board of Admiralty for the purpose of the relief expedition. In placing the 'Morning' at the disposal of the Admiralty the two Societies trust their Lordships will undertake all the liabilities that have been incurred since her return to Lyttelton.
Under the articles signed by the officers and Crew, they are engaged for the Relief Expedition and it was intended they should complete their service. To secure the continuing of the Relief Expedition the Societies shall be glad to nominate a member of the Council of the Royal Geographical Society to furnish to the Admiralty all the information in the Society's possession. The Finance Committee are fully prepared to administer the remaining funds for the purposes of the 'Discovery' itself. As distinguished from the relief expedition. |
