Title | Copy letter from Joseph Larmor and Archibald Geikie, to the President of the British Medical Association |
Date | 4 February 1904 |
Description | Larmor and Geikie outline the particulars of the case in which a Paper by Dr Bashford and Dr Murray "The Significance of the Zoological Distribution, the Nature of the Mitoses, and the Transmissibility of Cancer" was published in the British Medical Journal despite no official copy having been sent to them by the Royal Society, this being, according to Society Statute, the only manner in which advances copies might be sent to Journals. They mention the repeated application by the British Medical Journal for a copy before revision of the proof could be made, and the repeated statement of the Society's position.
They enclose a copy of the reply from the Editor of the British Medical Journal upon informing him of the irregularity, and highlight the seriousness of the fact that, in spite of a notice on each proof explicitly stating that it is not to be communicated for publication, the copy of the paper had been obtained from the proofs supplied for the convenience of the Fellows attending the meeting. As the President of the British Medical Association, they apply to him for a more adequate explanation of his Society's conduct than they have thus far received and to ask for some assurance from him. |
