Title | Copy letter from Joseph Larmor, to Dr Edward Divers, Fellow of the Royal Society |
Date | 2 January 1906 |
Description | Divers letter to the President of the Royal Society, in response to one from Larmor, has been forwarded to Larmor. He repeats his explanation of the procedure when a vacancy occurs on the Executive Committee of the National Physical Laboratory by resignation.
In the case of Mr Beilby, whose name was on a preliminary list for selection as nominated by the Society of Chemical Industry, he wrote declining Divers nomination as he was already on the Board. The Council believed he was still their first choice, so he would still be nominated to the Executive Committee in the other way. Divers' letter to the President, however, suggests that they would prefer that the other mode of selection be followed, namely that the Council of the Royal Society should select someone nominated by and representing Technical Societies on the General Board. Unless they hear further, they will assume Beilby's selection to have lapsed, with Council to select for the vacancy on 18 January. The views of the Society of Chemical Industry, as expressed in Divers letter, will be given due weight. |
