Title | Copy letter from Joseph Larmor, to the Secretary to His Majesty's Treasury |
Date | 26 July 1906 |
Description | The letter of the Permanent Secretary of the Treasury of 17 July, informing the Royal Society of the intention of their Lordships to appoint a Committee of Inquiry into the scope of operation of the National Physical Laboratory, has been submitted to the Executive Committee of the Laboratory, who have stated their views for the guidance of the Society.
The Society fully recognize the importance of considering the question raised by Mr McKenna, but feel it will be difficult to deal with it apart from other aspects of the work of the laboratory. The Society would welcome an official inquiry by a representative body which should include among its objects reference to the question of commercial testing. Notes a small committee would probably find great difficulty in appreciating the general question of the relation of the National Physical Laboratory to the national industries, which took so prominent a place in the deliberations of the previous Committee.
The choice of a representative of the Society would be greatly assisted if they could have fuller information as to the constitution of the proposed Committee and the terms of reference. |
