TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to Alfred Bray Kempe, Treasurer, Royal Society
Date16 December 1907
DescriptionHarrison has been trying to devise a means of identifying the payments of publication bills, particularly engraving, with the particulars given on the returns obtained for Kempe from Mr White's books, but it is difficult to work out as engraving bills are almost always paid before the relevant paper is published, or even allocated a particular number.

Proceedings of the Royal Society is considered by Kempe, in his returns, number by number, but the engraving payments are dealt with paper by paper before they are allocated to a particular number. Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society is more straightforward, if you identify separate papers by their author's name before a number has been attached.

Kempe may devise a means of establishing the correspondence if he wants, but the simplest method of delaying payments until after the paper is published would be very hard on some engravers, who may have to wait months for payment. He may be able to suggest a means of overcoming the problem when he next comes in. They will have cheques ready for his signature on Wednesday.
