TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, Assistant Secretary of the Royal Society; to W [Walter] Alison Phillips, Esq
Date31 July 1919
DescriptionAdvises that the Council of the Royal Society has not yet come to a decision regarding the Encyclopaedia Britannica Educational Foundation, as the members felt they needed more information on the terms of the trust and the financing of the venture. This includes the source of the capital for supplementary volumes, and what will happen to the profits beyond the small sum earmarked for research. They would also like to know who would be acting as trustees, and the principle governing the selection of trustees. Before debating the matter further, they would like to consult men prominent in education (under condition of secrecy if necessary) on the feasibility of the part of the scheme designed to encourage self-education in the home.
