TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs
Date8 April 1886
DescriptionIt has come to the Royal Society's knowledge that Professor Tachini, Director of the Observatory of the Collegio Romanio at Rome, is making preparations to observe the total eclipse of the sun, which will be visible in one of the British possessions, Grenada, next August. In consequnece of representations made by the Society, the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty have granted the use of one of Her Majesty's vessels between Barbados and the stations on the island of Grenada and it is hoped that the Colonial authorities at the latter islands will facilitate the expedition work. The Society is anxious that Tachini should take advantage of these arrangements and therefore asks that the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs informs Tachini through his Government that the Royal Society invite him to join the British expedition to Barbados.
