TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Under Secretary of State, The Colonial Office
Date8 April 1886
DescriptionThe Lords Commissioners of H M Treasury have agreed to insert a sum in the estimates for observations to be made of the total eclipse of the sun visible at Grenada on 29 August next. The Lord's Commissioners of the Admiralty have consented to the use of one of H M's vessels to convey the observers and their instruments from Barbados, and to lend assistance required in the erection of their instruments and observatories. Asks that this matter be brought to the notice of the Secretary of State for the Colonial Department so that he may request the Governor of Grenada to offer local assistance. Once the various observation points are exactly determined it would be extremely convenient if the local authorities could provide assistance with obtaining supplies of food, wood for building and police arrangements. The expedition should reach the island about 14 August.
