TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster and copy report from John Murray, to Secretary, the Treasury
Date19 May-1 June 1886
DescriptionAt the direction of the Challenger Publication Committee of the Royal Society, Foster forwards for the Lords Commissioners of H M Treasury, the annual report by Mr John Murray on the progress of the 'Challenger' publications [p110-113]. In the Committee's opinion the progress of the work is satisfactory and Murray is doing his best to prevent unavoidable difficulties, such as the illness of authors, from causing serious delays. The Committee feel that the value of this proceeding is much impaired by the Lords having previously obtained a statement of estimates directly from Mr Murray, before they had been submitted to the Committee. If the Lords desire an annual report with estimates earlier in the year there would be no difficulty in making the necessary arrangements.
