TitleCopy letter from Thomas Henry Huxley, to Colonel Mailtand
Date17 November 1885
DescriptionThanks Maitland for information respecting borings at Rosetta. Thinks it interesting they have reached 153 feet deep without touching rock bottom. The Committee does not think it would be desirable to take over the 'slaging' to which Maitland refers, or continue the borings at Rosetta. They are however very anxious the original plan of carrying a line of borings across the Delta in the latitude of Tanlah or thereabouts should be carried out. Even two or three borings would be of great value if carried through the whole depth of the river deposit. The [Royal] Society has offered the War Office to contribute £200 towards further expenses and Huxley is about to write to Sir A Clarke to ask him to forward the matter.
