TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to Sir Frederick Augustus Abel
Date18 March 1887
DescriptionAbel's letter of 1 February 1887 to the President has been laid by him before the Council who in reply feel great interest in any undertaking intended to bring the industry and commerce of the Empire into closer relation with natural knowledge and those scientific methods which it is the duty of the Society to foster, and more especially in one which promises by strengthening the bonds between the mother country and colonies and dependencies, to secure the present and future welfare of the Empire. The President and Council learn with satisfaction that it is the desire of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales that the proposed Imperial Institute should be so established and so conducted as to gain these ends.

The President and Council feel sure the Fellows will embrace an opportunity of contributing their token of love and loyalty to their Soveriegn Lady, the patron of the Society, in commemoration of the Jubilee year of Her happy reign, but have concluded that they would not be justified in adopting the suggestion of Abel's letter to identify the Society with the Institute, by making to the Fellows a formal appeal for subscriptions.
