Title | Copy letter from Michael Foster, to Ellis Lever |
Date | 8 July 1887 |
Description | Lever's letter of the 7 June 1887 to the President of the Royal Society has been laid before the Council and both the President and Council fully appreciate the humane motives leading to Lever's generous offer.
It has not however been the Society's practice to offer or adjudicate prizes placed in their hands by private munificence. Though the President and Council consented to nominate a representative to serve on the Committee for adjudicating the former prize offered by Lever, they are unwilling to make any further precedent.
Foster explains why he doubts the stimulus of a prize is necessary or desirable for the production of an adequate safety lamp, and why the Society considers it best to leave the matter to the operation of commercial competition. |
