TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Secretary, Her Majesty's Treasury
Date8 July 1887
DescriptionThe President and Council of the Royal Society have learned with great surprise and profound regret that on 4 March the Lord Lyons, Her Majesty's Ambassador at Paris gave official notice of the intention of Her Majesty's Government to withdraw from the Comité International des Poids et Measures. This was done without any intimation to the scientific men of the country and the President and Council feel this would be so distinctly injurious if put into effect that they feel bound to make an urgent appeal to Government to reconsider the decision.

The Society is in ignorance as to the reasons behind this decision. Foster outlines the importance of the Comité emphasising that withdrawl must be followed by a large increase in expenditure in order to provide adequate verification of England's own standards. The Society will if desired obtain for the further information of Government, not only the views on the scientific and practical bearings of the proposed step, but also such statements of facts as may be useful in enabling them to form their own judgement.

If desired the Society will gladly make arrangements for a deputation to wait upon the Chancellor of the Exchequer or some other member of Government with the view of giving detailed explanations.
