DescriptionRix is directed to acknowledge receipt of the President's letter of the 14th addressed to the Royal Society's President, and to explain that the Report of the 'Challenger' Expedition is not in the gift of the RoyaL Society; it is a Government publication and solely in the gift of Her Majesty's Treasury.

Should Her Majesty's Government consult the Society on the distribution of the volumes, the President's application will be considered but at present the Society has received no communication from the Government on that question.
