| Description | Rix thought he had better write to Foster regarding an interview with Dr [Frederick William] Pavy which he has just had. Under two statutes; chapter X paragraph 6, and chapter XIV paragraph 3, Pavy demanded to know the names of the referees of [Diarmid] Noel Paton's paper. Rix showed Pavy the minutes of the committee of papers but the names of the referee's are of course not entered. Pavy wanted Rix to say that the officers had appointed the referees. Rix replied that the Officers had provisionally appointed the referees no doubt, but declined to say if it was upon their reports that the Committee had acted.
Rix thinks there is 'something unpleasant in the wind' and it was at the same meeting that Pavy's own paper was archived. It was under the same statues that Professor [James Joseph] Sylvester demanded to see the minutes on a previous occasssion and the same statutes were quoted by Professor [James] Dewar when he asked to see the Government Grant Board's minutes, but on the latter occassion Rix was able to put him off.
If there is any doubt about the interpretation of these two statutes Rix would like a definite instruction from the Officers next Thursday.
Has visited with the Treasurer [John Evans] the Jermyn Street Museum and they both think the theatre there must better suited to the meeting of the 31st than the London University theatre. The former are willing to supply the space and Professor [Arthur William] Rucker is willing to supply his light lantern and screen. |
