| Description | The whole of the £1600 which in 1889 was trusted to the Royal Society for the completion of the publication of the report of the 'Challenger' Expedition has been paid over to Dr Murray. All the volumes including the summary have been published and the distribution of specimens has been carried out, or is on the point of being carried out, according to the arrangements suggested in Foster's letter of 16 May 1899.
The President and Council express their confidence that men of science all over the world hold themselves deeply indebted to Her Majesty's Government for the invaluable contribution to knowledge which the volumes of the Challenger Reports constitute.
Discusses the expense far exceeding the original limits intended for the publication but notes those limits had already virtually been exceeded at the time the Lord's requested the Royal Society's assistance in the matter. Foster explains though much money has been spent, none has been wasted. Explains that the merit of the report lies with its numerous contributors and with Dr Murray as editor.
Suggests that the usefulness of the publication could be further increased by presenting some complete reports to certain scientific institutions in addition to those the Lords already generously present copies to, who do not have sufficient funds for such a purchase. The Royal Society offers to make a selection of the scientific institutions to which so valuable a present might be given. |
