| Description | It is needless to tell Joly that [Henry Horatio] Dixon's paper was most carefully considered by the Committee of papers. They were advised that the paper though very meritorious and showing great diligence and accuracy, did not appear to be of such importance as to recommend it for publication in the 'Philosophical Transactions [of the Royal Society]'.
The Society has lately been led to reconsider their publications and cannot publish everything which is sent to them and is worthy of publication. They have determined to restrict the future publication of the 'Phil. Trans.' to papers of great merit. Of course in the past the same severity has not been exercised and Dixon must not think that by declining this paper they think it unworthy of publication or even necessarily inferior to papers which have been published in the 'Phil. Trans.' in the past.
At the same meeting the Committee came to the same conclusion with regards to another biological papers, much on a level with Dixon's. In that case they recommend the paper for publication elsewhere than in 'Phil. Trans.' and made a grant to defray the expenses of plates. The Society thought that in the case of Dixon's paper there would be no difficulty in its being published somewhere in Dublin. If of any use Rix is confident the Society would be willing to express their opinion as to its value, and if necessary would consider the desirability of making a grant in aid. |
