DescriptionThinks it would be a good idea to show Mr Chamberlain the covering letter sent in the with list and encloses a spare copy of it [not attached]. As explained in that letter the Society chose Fiji and Bahamas not for their importance as colonies but because they were places likely to be visited by exploring expeditions and the like to whom the opportunity of consulting the report [of the 'Challenger'] would be of great scientific value.

They did consider the claims of both Ceylon and Natal but concluded that in neither case was the claim so strong as in the cases which they did recommend from the Colonies.
