| Description | Foster acknowledges the Secretary's letter of 9th October and expresses the pleasure with which the President and Council learn that the Lords have made grants of volumes of the 'Challenger' Report to the institutions and individuals mentioned in the Secretary's letter.
They are glad the Lords are prepared to consider making grants to deserving institutions from the separate volumes relating to Biological Science remaining on hand without prospect of sale. Foster shall shortly send a 'very long' list of the most pressing cases with their special requirements.
Scientific reasons led to the recommendation that a copy of the report should be presented to the University of Odessa, rather than that another copy should be sent to St Petersburg. Foster is directed to express the extreme regret of the President and Council that a copy is not to be presented to the Zoological Institute of the University of Berlin, whose head, Professor Franz Eilhard Schulze, rendered special service in completing the work on sponges, for which the plates had been drawn under the direction of the late Sir Wyville Thomson. By skillfully using the plates prepared by another, Professor Schulze saved the report much expense. The Institute is a centre of great scientific activity and the volumes would be in continued use there.
The University of Gottingen would have been on the Royal Society's list had there been a larger number of copies for disposal. |
