Title	Copy letter from Herbert Rix, to Professor Michael Foster, [Royal Society]

Description	Rix suggests that to do what Foster proposes would create confusion about Dr Vaughan Harley's application, which is for a grant in addition to the one he holds from the Donation Fund to continue the same research. In such cases the research then belonging to two funds, which is often the source of errors. The letter had been raised with Foster, but it was postponed when on the Council Agenda for the 16 January, and postponed again on 30 January due to Foster's illness. Rix therefore asks that he decide if the application should go to the Government Grant, and that he send the letter from his portfolio by return of post. He states that it cannot go into the printed book now. He is receiving applications for admission to the meetings on colour photography, and asks how he should answer, noting that the regulations last year, stated in Council Minutes, were to apply only to the meeting on 31 January and not discussion meetings in general. Sir John Hay is reported to have been enquiring whether George Francis Scott-Elliot was 'in disgrace', and Rix explains that it appears he is to marry a relative of Hay's. Hay has asked to see the entries in the Royal Society's Council Minutes, and Rix showed him those in print, and informed him that he knew of nothing against Elliot personally, but did not know what had occurred in the previous day's Council. He further notes that should nothing appear against Elliot, it would be a 'charity' to relieve Hay's mind. A postscript states that the Treasurer, Sir John Evans, has been in and states that as Harley's grant is from the Donation Fund, the supplementary grant should come from the same source.
