TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Secretary of Admiralty, S.W.
Date24 August 1896
DescriptionFoster is directed by the President and Council to transmit to the Secretary for the information of the Lords of Admiralty, a copy of a communication with enclosures [not attached], which the Royal Society has received from Professor J Norman Lockyer, relative to the recent Eclipse Expedition.

The President and Council are aware of the great and valuable services which on many former occasions have been rendered by the Officers and men of Her Majesty's Navy to scientific expeditions carried out at the instigation or under the direction of the Royal Society. On the present occasion the help given by Captain King Hall and his Officers seems, as Lockyer says, to have been of unprecedented character. That the weather prevented large additions to the knowledge of solar physics in no way lessens the debt to science of those who made such elaborate preparations for observation.

The President and Council wish to make known their most grateful appreciation and to ask that, if the Lords approve, special thanks are conveyed to Captain King Hall and the Officers and the men of HMS 'Volage' named in the enclosure sent with Lockyer's letter.

Adequate notice of the remarkable skill and zeal with which these men assisted Lockyer will not fail to be mentioned when the record of the expedition is written.
