| Description | Foster is directed by the President and Council of the Royal Society to express the hope that the Lords of Admiralty will be so kind as to convey to Captain Field of HMS 'Penguin', the warmest thanks of the Society for the most valuable assistance he has recently given to the expedition for boring a coral reef in the Pacific Ocean.
The scientific gentlemen in charge of the expedition speak with enthusiasm of the most cordial and persistent support given to all their efforts by the Officers and crew of the 'Penguin', and to express the hope that the thanks of the Society may also be conveyed to Lieutenant Dawson and Lieutenant Waugh. That the object of the expedition has not been wholly successful in no way lessens the gratitude which the Society feel towards those gentlemen for the most important help which they gave to the undertaking. |
