TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Secretary, The Admiralty, Whitehall, S.W.
Date7 December 1896
DescriptionFoster, under the direction of the President and Council of the Royal Society, asks to convey to the Admiralty the thanks of the Society for the assistance which they have given to the recent solar eclipse expeditions to Norway and Japan. He notes that the fact the results were disappointing does not lessen the Society's gratitude for the aid which they have been given.

On 24 August Foster had requested that they inform Captain King Hall and the Officers and Crew of H.M.S "Volage" of their great appreciation of the aid rendered to Joseph Norman Lockyer's party at Vadso, noting that circumstances led to that request being made prior to the general report of the expeditions reached the Society. He now makes a further request, that they similarly convey thanks for the aid granted to the observing party by Admiral Sir Alexander Buller, along with the Officers and Crews of H.M.S. "Humber", "Linnet", and "Pique", as well as by Commodore Atkinson of H.M.S. "Active" with the Officers and Crew, for their assistance of Dr Common's group in Norway.
