TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to William Henry Mahoney Christie, Fellow of the Royal Society, Astronomer Royal
Date22 March 1897
DescriptionThe Committee much regretted Christie's absence on Friday from the meeting on the subject of the unification of time at sea, and directed Harrison to communicate the following resolution which they decided to adopt as their report to the Council, but which they desired Christie to see before it went to Council.

The resolution is quoted as follows: 'The Committee report that as there is a great diversity of opinion amongst astronomers and sailors as to the advisability of the adoption of civil reckoning for astronomical purposes, and as it is impossible to carry out such a change in the 'Natuical Almanac' for the year 1901, they do not recommend that the Royal Society should at present take any steps in support of the suggested change of reckoning'.
