TitleCopy letter from Edward Frankland, to the President and Fellows of the Kongliche Akademie der Wissenschaften, Berlin
Date27 March 1897
DescriptionOn behalf of the President and Council of the Royal Society, and in conformity with their unanimous resolution, they desire to offer their sincere condolences on the loss that they, in common with the whole scientific world, have recently sustained in the death of their distinguished compatriot Professor Weierstrass, who since 1881 they have had the honour of numbering amongst their Foreign Members.

In 1895 the Council of the Royal Society was proud to award Weierstrass the Copley Medal, the highest honour it has the power to bestow in recognition of scientific worth. Wierstrass' prolonged and active life caused him to be regarded for many years as a veteran amongst mathematicians, and when in 1840 he published a part of what is now his famous memoir, the Society's own Cayley was still an undergraduate at Cambridge.
