TitleCopy letter from Arthur William Rucker, to Professor George Howard Darwin, Fellow of the Royal Society
Date9 April 1897
DescriptionThe Society has received a paper on 'A Maya Calendar Inscription interpreted by Goodman's Tables' by A P Maudslay. Rucker believes that Maudslay is a great authority on such matters but the difficulty is to find anyone who can give an opinion on such a subject. The Society think it desirable that a mathematical astronomer should look at the paper and will note[?] it as referred to Darwin's Committee. If another opinion is desirable, Rucker thinks it may be best to send it to [Augustus Wollaston] Franks and ask him if he can give an opinion, and if not whether he can name anyone who can.

Unfortunately by Standing Order 41, the Secretary and Chairman can only submit a paper to a Fellow of the Society, and if, as is very possible, Franks recommend someone who is not an FRS, Darwin must get the consent of his Committee. Rucker is sorry to bother Darwin in this matter but there seems to be no other course open. It is not stated whether the paper is for the 'Proceedings [of the Royal Society]' or the '[Philosophical] Transactions [of the Royal Society]', so that the referees might report on this point also.
