TitleCopy letter from Arthur William Rucker, to the Secretary of Admiralty, Whitehall, S.W.
Date30 April 1897
DescriptionIn connection with the arrangements for observing the total solar eclipse of 22 January 1898, the Joint Committee of the Royal Society and Royal Astronomical Society purposes sending a party of observers from Bombay or Colombo to a suitable point on the coast.

The party will consist of Joseph Norman Lockyer and two assistants, with instructions to repeat the observations attempted last year in Norway, where the observers received invaluable assistance from the Captain and Crew of HMS 'Volage'. On that occasion Her Majesty's Ships conveyed one party of observers to their station and furnished a further 24 assistants and 50 volunteers, who rendered most zealous and efficient aid in the preparations for the observations.

Rucker hopes the Lords of Admiralty will be willing to provide the demands of the service permit, to render the expedition the great assistance of allowing one of Her Majesty's vessels to convey this party of observers from Bombay or Colombo, as may be found most convenient to Viziadrug on the coast, and to allow the vessel to be used as a base of operations for the observing part.

Exact dates and further details can be provided later on.
