TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, Colonial Office, S.W.
Date23 September 1897
DescriptionHarrison is directed to apply to the Under Secretary on behalf of one of the expeditions which is being sent out to India by the Joint Permanent Eclipse Committee to observe the Total Solar Eclipse in January.

The Lords of Admiralty have made arrangements for the observing party under Sir J Norman Lockyer to be conveyed to their post of observation in a vessel of war from Colombo, to which the port party will proceed by an ordinary passenger steamer. They wish the transhipment of the party and equipment at Colombo to be facilitated as much as possible, and especially without any disturbance of the instruments. The President and Council hope therefore that the Under Secretary will give instructions that the observing party will be allowed to land, if necessary, without any customs examination and charges, and that as much general assistance and facilities may be given to the party as may be conveniently in the power of the local authorities.

The Government of India have already sanctioned the importation of the instruments free of duty.
