TitleCopy letter from Arthur William Rucker, to the Under Secretary of State for India, India Officem Whitehall, S.W.
Date1 December 1897
DescriptionRucker has been in communication with the Astronomer Royal [William Henry Mahoney Christie] who as Chairman of the Joint Solar Eclipse Committee, has had the direct management of the details of the expeditions about to proceed to India. Arrangements concerning housing et cetera for the various parties have been made with the Surveyor-General for India, subject to the approval of the Government of India. Encloses a copy of a letter dated 9th June from the Survey of India Department to the Astronomer Royal and a copy of an extract from a letter dated 23rd September from Captain Burrard [not enclosed].

From these directions it appears preparations for the reception of the observing parties are in active progress and have the sanction of the Government of India. On this assumption the Astronomer Royal sent Burrard detailed instructions for the Eclipse Camp. Neither the Royal Society nor the Astronomer Royal has received official information of the assent of the Government of India to the arrangements referred to.
