DescriptionUnder the guidance of a Joint Committee of the Royal Society and Royal Astronomical Society, an expedition is about to be sent out to India to observe the Total Solar Eclipse of 22 January 1898. Harrison is directed to express the hopes of the President and Council that the Government of India will be disposed, as on a former occasion, to give instructions that the observing parties may be allowed to land their various instruments without the usual customs examinations and charges, and in general will give the observing parties such assistance and facilities as may be conveniently in their power.

The exact details of the expedition personnel are not yet finally settled. As soon as they are Foster shall address the Under Secretary again.
