TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Secretary to Admiralty, Whitehall, S.W.
Date3 December 1897
DescriptionDuring the past autumn Professor J [T] W Edgeworth of the University of Sydney has been engaged, with the approval and assistance of the Royal Society, in continuing the deep boring of the Coral Reef at Funafuti which had been begun by an expedition under Professor [William Johnson] Sollas.

Last September after Professor David has sailed from the island, leaving the boring to be carried on by the staff remaining there, Commander E G Rason of HMS 'Royalist', visiting Funafuti had generously rendered much material assistance to the work, in response to a request from Professor David.

Asks the Lords of Admiralty to make known to Commander Rason that the Society very highly appreciate the assistance he gave to a scientific undertaking of great importance.
