TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Secretary to the Admiralty, S.W.
Date2 February 1898
DescriptionDirected by the President and Council of the Royal Society to bring before the notice of the Admiralty that preparations are being made in Sydney, Australia, to send out a third expedition and, if possible, complete the boring of the Coral Reef at Funafuti. The second expedition carried down the boring to the depth of 698 feet. The President and Council are keen to assist the Sydney expedition since it is believed that the rock bed lies at a depth of about 850 feet.

Professor Edgeworth David of Sydney advises that the expedition will probably take place at the end of March or in April next, but there are great difficulties in arranging the trip.

The Admiralty greatly assisted the first expedition, and Commander Rason of HMS 'Royalist' greatly assisted the second expedition. Request that assistance in a third expedition is given and will send directions to the Admiral of the Australian station to put himself in communication with Professor David, of Sydney University, with the view of assisting the expedition by conveying it in one of Her Majesty's ships from Sydney to Funafuti. Alternatively, if this cannot be done, from Suva to Funafuti.
