TitleCopy letter from Arthur William Rucker, to Lord Kelvin [William Thomson], Fellow of the Royal Society
Date26 January 1898
DescriptionExplains that the decision of the Council to allow Mr Murray's paper to be withdrawn was chiefly chosen to be in accordance with Kelvin's views. Harrison now understands that Kelvin (1) proposes that the paper shall be withdrawn and regarded as read in spite of the mistake made in the final announcement of the fact; (2) that Murray shall return the original manuscript; and (3) that Murray shall publish an abstract, thorter than that previously sent in, which shall be published in the 'Proceeding [of the Royal Society].' Harrison believes that the Council will agree to these proposals and that, in accordance with Harrison's letter of the 21 May, the question of the length of the abstract will be left to Kelvin.

Harrison expresses that the Council deeply regrets that Kelvin's opinion was not in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee since they attach the highest importance to his views.
