DescriptionMr Lucas' letter of the 8th August has been carefully considered by the Committee of the Royal Society and Foster is directed to make the following reply.

The Committee cordially accept the suggestion made by Mr Chamberlain to nominate a member of the Colonial Service. Explains briefly why the Committee in their original proposal entrusted two experts rather than one. The Committee suggest that the member of the Colonial Service nominated by Chamberlain, not replace one of the experts nominated by them, but be added as a third. They have reason to believe that one of the two gentlemen whom they propose to nominate also possess entomological knowledge.

Explains why the Committee does not think that the expert nominated by Chamberlain be sent out to study under Surgeon-Major Ross. If Chamberlain still wishes that the expert he nominates should make the journey, it would be undertaken upon direct instruction from the Colonial Office and quite independent of the Royal Society.

With respect to the general conduct of the inquiry, the Committee assumes that the observers entrusted will receive their instructions from the Committee and report to them from time to time in order that the Committee may generally superintend over the whole enquiry. The Committee regret that the limited funds at the disposal of the Royal Society do not permit them to promise a larger sum than that named in any former letter.
