TitleCopy letter from the Secretary of the Royal Society, to the Under Secretary of State, Colonial Office, Downing Street, S.W.
Date3 September 1898
DescriptionIn reply to Lucas' letter of 30 August, the Secretary is directed to express the great gratification with which the Society learns that Chamberlain concurs in the suggestions made in the Secretary's former letter.

The Society cordially accepted Chamberlain's proposal that Dr P Panson and C P Lucas should join the Committee to superintend the proposed [malaria] investigation. Owing to the recess the Committee cannot meet before October, the Royal Society proposes that the two observers nominated by them should proceed at once to Italy, to carry on preliminary observations and return to England in time to receive their fuller instructions from the Committee towards the end of October or beginning of November.

The Secretary is authorized to confer with Lucas as suggested in Lucas' letter, with the view to arranging details as need to be settled before the Committee meets.
