| Description | The President and Council are glad to learn that Her Majesty's Government are prepared to ask Parliament to vote an annual sum of £4,000 for five years certain, as a grant in aid of the expenses of a National Physical Laboratory; and also to make a grant not exceeding £12,000 in all towards the erection of buildings. The sums named would not be sufficient to found a new institution fulfilling all the requirements indicated in the Report of Lord Rayleigh's Committee. However as it is recommended that the institution be an extension of the Kew Observatory, the President and Council believe the proposed endowment will greatly increase the utility and range of work there done.
The President and Council accept in principle the suggestion that the Society undertake the management of the enlarged Kew Observatory and are willing to discuss details of the scheme with the officers of the Treasury Board, having appointed a small committee for this.
Details several matters affecting the value of the annual endowment to which immediate attention should be drawn, since they appear to have a serious bearing on the successful realization of the project. These involve the Meteorological Council, Kew Committee, Her Majesty's Office of Works, and the Government Grant for Scientific Research. |
